Maintenance 101: How to Extend the Life of Your Rotary Valve

Maintenance 101: How to Extend the Life of Your Rotary Valve

In high-output environments like a Coal Handling Plant System, a single valve failure can halt an entire production line. Regular maintenance of your Pyramid brand equipment is the most cost-effective way to ensure long-term reliability.

At Shree Techno Engineers, we design our valves for durability, but the abrasive nature of materials in an Ash Handling System requires a proactive service approach. Follow this technical checklist to keep your systems running smoothly.

1. Weekly Visual Inspections

The first line of defense is a simple visual check. Look for:

  • Seal Leakage:
Check the gland packing area for fine dust. If you notice leaks, tighten the packing nuts or consider upgrading to an SS 316 Rotary Feeder for corrosive environments.
  • Drive Tension:
Ensure the chain drive or direct-coupling is secure. A loose chain causes “jerking” motions that damage the Cast Iron Rotary Valve housing.

2. Measuring Rotor Clearances

As abrasive materials like fly ash pass through the valve, they gradually wear down the rotor tips.

  • Use a feeler gauge to check the gap between the rotor and the housing.
  • If the clearance exceeds 0.008″, you will experience significant pressure loss.
  • For fabricated units like our MS Fabricated Airlock, we offer replaceable or beveled tips to make this maintenance faster and cheaper.

3. Bearing and Lubrication Protocols

Shree Techno Engineers uses outboard bearings on most Pyramid valves to prevent material contamination.

  • Lubrication:
Use high-temperature grease for valves installed near boilers.
  • Contamination Check:
If grease looks gritty or black, it’s time to replace the seals to protect the bearing from industrial fuel system dust.

4. Cleaning the Venting System

In a Fuel Handling Plant, “carry-over air” can reduce pocket-filling efficiency. If your valve is equipped with a venting port, ensure it is clear of material buildup. A clogged vent increases internal pressure on the seals, leading to premature failure.

Conclusion: Invest in Prevention

Routine maintenance is the difference between a 2-year and a 10-year lifespan for your equipment. By following these steps, you protect the precision engineering that Shree Techno Engineers builds into every
Pyramid valve.
